Whether we are talking about businesses, communities or individual homes – risk is a big part of life. In these difficult times, risk is ever-present. We might not all be aware of it all the time, but we are all managing risk on a daily basis.
Every time we take a decision about whether we should go out or meet up with others in the present climate, we are consciously or unconsciously weighing risk in our heads and making choices based on the level of risk we are happy with.
We may be aware of the health risks we face leaving our homes and engaging with others at present. But there are plenty of other risks of which we are likely less aware. Of course, when it comes to our health, managing risk means wearing a face mask, social distancing and practicing good hygiene. But how do we manage other risks in our lives?
The first stage to managing risk is identifying risks in the first place. Risks might be physical (threats that could harm us bodily). But they could equally well be emotional risks, environmental risks, or financial ones. (Often, risks in all sectors are linked, so it is important to take a holistic approach, and think long-term.)
Once we begin to build up a better picture of risk in our lives, we need to think deeply about what level of risk we personally are happy with. Of course, we also need to remember that often, when it comes to managing risk, we are not making decisions only for ourselves.
Permaculture is not just about food production. It can also help us develop anti-fragile systems in all sectors of life. The more fragility there is in a system, the more risk there is. By implementing practices and procedures that will endure sustainably over time, we can mitigate risks of all kinds, and find more peace of mind in a risk-filled world.
