Case Study: Alabama Permaculture Design

This is a quick design for a domestic backyard in Alabama. The site slopes downwards towards the east, and the client asked for a design that would allow them to make the most of the site and grow their own fruit and vegetables.

The swales in this design are paired with hugelkultur techniques. And I have recommended creating a forest garden area to the south of the main beds that will aid in retaining water and nutrients on the slope, and will also provide some partial shade for other growing areas.

By creating a catchment pond as is shown in this design, the homeowner would potentially be able to rear fish as another edible yield, in addition to growing fruits, vegetables and herbs. There would also be potential to create an aquaponics system in future.

If you are interested in this design and would like something similar for your own property, please do get in touch.
