Working with small and somewhat awkwardly shaped garden spaces is a challenge for many gardeners. But with the right designs we can overcome all the difficulties that can arise and create attractive and functional spaces.
Yorkshire Permaculture Design
This design for a property near the coast of North Yorkshire, in England, works with existing features and reclaimed materials already on the site, while bringing in more elements and working to make the garden a more cohesive and attractive space.
I work on designs at a range of scales – from huge areas at landscape scale, to the tiniest of container gardens. These designs obviously involve different challenges, and need different approaches to some degree. But of course permaculture ideas, principles and practices all come into play, no matter the size of the project.
Low-Maintenance, Wildlife-Friendly, No Waste
In this garden project, plenty of perennial planting provides a relatively low-maintenance yet productive scheme, providing a lush, tranquil and private feeling and bringing in plenty of wildlife to share the space. Different seating areas provide spaces for the client to enjoy at different times of day, throughout the year.
Small reclaimed pavers with ground-cover planting between and around them create a casual pathway leading past a small wildlife pond and seating area to a second garden room through a rose-clad archway to a herb spiral and small vegetable garden beyond, in the sunniest part of the space in front of the existing greenhouse.
The design, of course, responds to what is currently in place at the moment as well as to what will be, and that is important. In any design, it is important to work with what we already have as we work towards making it something better.
When we think about garden design, we may often imagine starting with a blank slate. Of course, most of us are not starting from that point. If you have an existing garden it is likely working in some ways and not working in others.
I can help you create a design that blends old and new to improve the space and create a more harmonious whole from the different elements of the space. If you would like to discuss how I can help with your garden, please do get in touch.
