Case Study: Maryland Permaculture

Location Maryland
Scale Garden
Year 2022
Masterplan drawing for Case Study: Maryland Permaculture
Masterplan drawing produced for the client as part of the final design package.

This design shows the expansion of existing vegetable growing areas and productive spaces into the existing lawn of a Maryland property.

It has been developed with reference to the location and site, and the client’s requirements, using permaculture design methods.

Located in the Coastal Plain region, almost entirely dependent on groundwater for its water supply, sustainability of water sources is a concern, so this design seeks to improve water catchment and management on the property as one key priority, building on the rainwater catchment already in place.

The property lies within USDA planting zone 7b. Average summer highs are around 88 F (c. 31C), and average winter lows are around 27 F (c. -2.8). There are, on average, around 46 inches of rain and 7 inches of snow per year.

The key elements of the design are:

  • Forest gardens – a new area, and an expanded and amended area of existing planting around two existing mature trees to the west side of the property.
  • An existing vegetable garden, and new large mandala garden for polyculture annual production.
  • A herb spiral for culinary herbs and strawberries.
  •  A rain garden.
  • Areas of native meadow.

Existing planting in border beds may also be expanded and added to over time.

Planting plans for each of these key areas, and an implementation plan were also delivered to the client as part of this design.

If you are interested in creating a plan to improve you existing garden for water management, food production, and to meet your other desires and needs, please do get in touch to discuss precisely how I can help you with your property.
