Permaculture Garden Design
Remote permaculture garden design for private landowners who want clear, practical plans that suit their land, climate and capacity — from small urban gardens to larger residential sites.
The case studies below show concept plans I have created for domestic garden designs. These are landscape designs for urban and rural properties, at a range of scales, in many different locations around the world.
These concept plans are typically the first stage of a design, to help clients visualise the big picture and broader patterns before we hone in on the detail. I also offer full planting plans and other deliverables, depending on a client’s specific needs and wishes.
Ways of working together
Land Strategy Session
A focused online conversation about your site before any design work begins — what is realistically possible, and the approach most likely to get you there.
Concept Plan
The big-picture layout: planting zones, water management and earthworks, access and paths, structures and boundaries, and the key features for enjoying the space.
Full Design & Planting Plan
A full planting plan, plant list and report, with scaled placement within each planting zone, native and climate-suited species, and practical notes for implementation.
Is permaculture garden design the right choice for you?
A permaculture garden design gives you a complete, site-specific plan, designed to be productive, ecological, and practical to implement.
It is design that takes ecological functionality into account, and works to create spaces that allow people to meet their own needs, and fit harmoniously alongside the more-than-human world.
If you want to garden organically, for wildlife, for humanity and for our planet, this type of regenerative design is the best choice.
If you are a new gardener feeling overwhelmed, an experienced gardener looking to learn, or just want to avoid costly trial and error, professional design support can make a significant difference.
This service suits all those who have some space to garden, no matter how much experience they have and how large or small that area may be.
What a design provides
Bespoke designs are tailored to specific projects, clients and goals, but would usually include:
- An initial concept plan — big-picture layout and planting zones, covering earthworks and water management, access, paving and pathways, structures and boundaries, key features for recreation, and perennial and annual growing areas as required
- A full planting plan, plant list and report giving further detail on the elements in the concept plan, with scaled plans for placement within key planting zones, using native and climate-suited plants chosen around your preferences and goals
- Practical details for earthworks, levels, materials and irrigation, with notes to aid implementation of the key ideas in the concept plan
- Phasing suggestions for gradual implementation
The aim is to give you a usable, coherent plan, rooted in reality, that can be used in implementation, not just a decorative illustration.
Working remotely
I work remotely with clients worldwide. Remote design allows for careful analysis and flexibility, without the cost and logistics of site visits, and I can also offer ongoing support and consultancy as a project is implemented.
Examples of permaculture garden projects
I have produced hundreds of garden design concepts across different climates and contexts, including:
- Small urban and suburban gardens
- Larger rural residential plots and multi-home residential sites
- Family-friendly and wildlife-friendly garden designs
- Early-stage gardens, and mature sites needing re-organisation and re-design
- Gardens meeting specific needs for food production, through to more aesthetics-focussed projects
Many clients have found it helpful to browse examples similar to their own site before they begin the journey to their own design.
