This is an early part of the concept work for a recent project that I have been working on – for a luxury villa project with steep terraces on the Amalfi Coast. This Villa is envisioned as more than a landscaped estate. It is conceived as a living Mediterranean landscape, one that restores, nourishes, and evolves with time.
Designing regenerative luxury landscapes for villas, castles, châteaux and private estates at a range of scales.

Set within the historic terraced slopes of the Amalfi Coast, the masterplan works not against the land, but with it. The existing stone terraces, the southern light, the coastal winds, the scent of citrus and sea air – these are treated not as constraints, but as guiding forces.
As with all my other projects, this design is rooted in permaculture principles: careful observation, respect for natural systems, thoughtful placement, and long-term ecological resilience. Each terrace performs multiple roles, productive, sensory, climatic, experiential, layered together to create depth and meaning.
Site Analysis for Luxury Villa Landscape Design
The villa is situated on a steep terraced hillside along the Amalfi Coast, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. The site benefits from expansive southern and south-western exposure, with significant solar gain throughout the year.
The terraced structure reflects historical agricultural adaptation to extreme slope conditions typical of the region. The Mediterranean climate is characterised by:
• Hot, dry summers
• Mild, wetter winters
• Periodic high wind exposure
• Intense seasonal rainfall events
• Salt-laden coastal air
My design interventions must, of course, respond to drought cycles, wind exposure, soil erosion risk and solar intensity.
All design decisions are also shaped by respect for existing terrace geometry, and the vernacular styles of this particular region, as well as by the need to provide a high-end, luxurious and immersive guest experience.
The site is intentionally divided into three maintenance categories to balance luxury, ecology and long-term practicality: an upper formal, managed zone, a semi-formal transitional zone in mid-tier terraces, and low-intervention, natural and wilder terraces further down the slope.
Ecological & Permaculture Framework for Regenerative Mediterranean Landscape Design
The planting strategy is informed by permaculture design principles and adapted specifically to the Amalfi coastal environment.
The approach prioritises:
• Working with natural slope and water movement
• Retaining and reusing on-site organic material
• Building soil fertility through layered planting systems
• Stacking functions (productive, ecological and experiential)
• Designing for low-input, long-term resilience
Key structural elements within this luxury landscape design include:
• Sfusato Amalfitano lemons and other citrus
• Espalier fruit trees along upper retaining walls
• Olive trees within lower terraces
• Mediterranean native shrubs and subshrubs
• Aromatic sensory planting near wellness areas
• Layered forest garden systems in transitional zones
Looking to integrate ecology, luxury and long-term resilience into your landscape project?
EWSP Consultancy collaborates with private clients, architects and developers to create regenerative landscapes shaped by climate, terrain and long-term ecological resilience.
Forest garden terraces integrate canopy, shrub, herbaceous and groundcover layers to increase biodiversity, moderate temperature, and improve soil health.
Native macchia/garrigue species are introduced progressively toward the lower terraces to reduce irrigation demand and strengthen ecological integrity.
Cleared vegetation will be retained and repurposed for mulching, composting and soil building wherever possible, reinforcing circular resource use within the site.
This strategy ensures that the Villa’s terraced garden functions not merely as a designed landscape, but as a regenerative system that improves over time.
