Ireland Permaculture Project – Eco-friendly and Family-Friendly Landscape Design

This design, which I worked on towards the end of last year, aims to provide a pleasing recreational space where wildlife is welcomed throughout the seasons, and where predominantly native planting is used to give aesthetic appeal, as well as some edible yields.

The design significantly boosts biodiversity on the property, while also dividing the space up into a number of child-friendly and multi-purpose areas.

Key elements within this design are:

  • A native, mixed hedgerow along the front of the property.
  • Native trees along the driveway and native trees and shrubs to the site’s northwestern edge.
  • A mound screening the patio area and home beyond from the road.
  • A stream/ waterfall water feature.
  • Native ornamental planting in a spiral form garden area.
  • Ornamental native gardens for pollinators to the north west of the house.
  • Herb gardens, adjacent a wooden pergola with climbing plants.
  • A fire pit area and kids’ play zone to the south east of the house.
  • Informal native plant borders and bed around water treatment system area.
  • Forest garden zones with layered planting to mimic the ecological function of a natural woodland or forest.
  • A native perennial plant border with grasses and herbaceous perennials on the south eastern border of the site.
  • Lawns for play/ recreation seeded with many native wildflowers.

As usual, the concept plan above was the first stage of the project. After discussion with the clients, I incorporated their feedback and then created this planting plan along with an accompanying plant list:
