This is my design for a property in Ireland for a client who wanted a really relaxing space. food production was a priority but so too was creating a space where she and her grown-up daughters could really breathe, meditate and unwind.
Aside from the trees to the north/ north west, the edge of a small adjacent pocket of woodland, the whole of the site is presently just tussocky grassland, with a smaller flatter lawn immediately around the existing home. More tussocky pastureland stretches off to the south and south west, with one other property visible to the south east.
The terrain, though undulating slightly, is largely level in elevation, with just a small rise from around the centre of the site to the easternmost side. The new suggested wildlife pond takes advantage of an existing small depression that gets a bit boggy in wet conditions.
Fruit trees are positioned on contour (approximately shown). these are of course underplanted in forest garden style with diverse edible and useful plantings that work harmoniously with one another. Winding wood chip pathways meander through this space from the more open, lawned areas where yoga and gymnastics can be practiced.
These lawns are to be seeded with native grass and wildflower mixes for greater biodiversity, though will be mowed several times in summer for easy access and bare-foot wandering.
The new greenhouse/ conservatory attached to the house, to be used for annual food production, will look out on a pleasing scene. And the clients can also relax overlooking the wildlife pond in the wooden gazebo, or on the bench seating at the heart of the site.
This is not one of the discounted permaculture design packages I offered for Christmas, though I hope to be able to share one or more of these in the new year.
Unfortunately, I cannot take on any more work to complete before Christmas. But please do reach out if you are interested in discussing a design to be delivered early next year. I can help you create your own ideal relaxing and tranquil garden space.
