Land Stewardship & Landscape Consultancy
Advice and stewardship strategy for land trusts, legacy landholdings and long-horizon projects.
Not every piece of land needs a drawing. Sometimes the question is not what to plant, but what to do: what to protect, what to change, what to leave alone, and how to make decisions today that will still make sense decades from now.
I provide independent advice for people and organisations responsible for land over the long term, helping them understand the opportunities, constraints and ecological processes at work and develop practical strategies for stewardship.
Land rarely fits neatly into a single discipline. Decisions about water affect soil; soil affects planting and productivity; planting affects biodiversity, microclimate and maintenance; and all of these interact with how people use, manage and value a place.
My approach brings together landscape design, permaculture, ecology, agroforestry, food production, water management and long-term land stewardship. Rather than considering each in isolation, I look at how they interact and where changes in one part of the system can strengthen, or undermine, another.
That cross-disciplinary perspective is particularly valuable when a piece of land has multiple uses, competing pressures or a long-term legacy to consider. My role is to help bring the different pieces together into a coherent, practical direction for the land.
What this usually involves
Depending on the land and the decision you are facing, this may include:
- Land and landscape assessment — understanding the site’s character, opportunities, constraints and existing systems.
- Ecological and hydrological review — assessing soils, water, habitats, vegetation and the wider ecological context.
- Land-use and stewardship strategy — developing practical approaches for how land can be cared for, managed and evolved over time.
- Long-term land planning — helping landowners, trusts and organisations make decisions with decades rather than seasons in mind.
- Independent advice and review — an experienced outside perspective on proposed changes, opportunities or difficult land-use decisions.
- Written stewardship plans and recommendations — clear documentation that trustees, landowners and land managers can use to guide future decisions.
- Ongoing land and landscape consultancy — continued advice as a project develops, circumstances change or new decisions arise.
- Design briefing and project direction — where a site would benefit from more detailed landscape design, helping establish the right brief and approach before design begins.
The work is tailored to the situation rather than delivered as a fixed package.
Private online workshops and guided discussion groups can be arranged on request. Please contact me with your requirements to discuss this option.
Through all my consultancy services, the aim is to give landowners, trustees and land managers a clearer understanding of their options and a practical basis for making decisions that will not only maintain but also improve the land over time.
Land stewardship and consultancy is a growing part of my work, particularly where land is held for purposes that extend beyond the immediate needs of an individual owner or business.
